Cold therapy & breathwork

Cold Immersion is a scientifically backed complementary wellness practice that involves exposing the body to cold water. It is based on the principle of applying a controlled stressor in the form of cold temperatures to elicit various physiological and psychological benefits.

When you expose your body to cold water, several physiological responses occur. Initially, there is vasoconstriction, which is the narrowing of blood vessels to conserve heat and maintain core body temperature. This process is followed by vasodilation, where the blood vessels expand, allowing increased blood flow. Cold immersion also activates the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to the release of norepinephrine and adrenaline, resulting in increased alertness and energy levels.

Some potential benefits of cold immersion include:

  • Reduced inflammation: Cold exposure has been shown to reduce inflammation and swelling, making it beneficial for post-workout recovery or managing certain inflammatory conditions.
  • Improved circulation: Cold immersion stimulates blood flow and enhances circulation, which can have positive effects on overall cardiovascular health.
  • Enhanced immune function: Cold exposure has been found to increase the production of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in immune function.
  • Increased energy and alertness: The release of norepinephrine and adrenaline during cold immersion can boost energy levels and promote mental alertness.
  • Mood enhancement: Cold water exposure may stimulate the release of endorphins, leading to an improvement in mood and a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Improved sleep: Some individuals report that cold immersion before bedtime can help promote better sleep by regulating body temperature and inducing a state of relaxation.

It’s important to note that while cold immersion can have potential benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone and should be done under the guidance of a healthcare professional. At IM Well our patients receive specific guidance on cold immersion protocols which can be done safely at home.
